On-call blocks per person

Blocks starting in 2027

4 people get 9 weeks; 2 get 8.Why the difference?

52 weeks do not divide evenly between 6 people, so some take one more. These counts measure turns, not hours or workload. Blocks starting in the previous year are shown in the schedule but excluded from these counts.

  • Person 1 9 weeks
  • Person 2 9 weeks
  • Person 3 9 weeks
  • Person 4 9 weeks
  • Person 5 8 weeks
  • Person 6 8 weeks

52 weeks do not divide evenly between 6 people, so some take one more. These counts measure turns, not hours or workload. Blocks starting in the previous year are shown in the schedule but excluded from these counts.

Print and downloads include every complete block overlapping the year. Calendar times follow the receiving app's local time zone.

For general information only, not professional advice. Check the official sources below. Use your own judgement and speak to your employer or HR team before you act.

How to create your on-call rota

  1. Enter member names in the order people should take turns. Use Add member or Remove to edit the team, up to 50 members. Each member needs a name. Use Remove to take someone out of the rota. Use initials if a name would reveal private details.
  2. Choose daily, weekly or custom blocks. For custom, enter 1 to 366 whole days per turn, then enter the first start date. The first name covers the first block.
  3. Set the local handover time. For weekly blocks, the handover day follows the first start date automatically. Changing the day moves the date within the same Monday-to-Sunday week, except at the supported date limits.
  4. Choose the calendar year and review coverage and blocks starting in that year. On a phone, move between weeks.
  5. Save on this device, share a settings link, print the full rota, or download continuous calendar events and a spreadsheet.

How it works

Each block goes to the next name, returning to the first name after everyone has had a turn. A daily block finishes at the same local time the next day; a weekly block finishes seven calendar days later. A custom block finishes after your chosen number of calendar days. The end is the next person's handover, so adjacent blocks do not overlap.

The selected year includes every full block that overlaps it, including a block that began in the previous year or finishes in the next. Counts include only blocks starting during the selected year. Carry-in coverage is displayed separately and is not counted as another start.

Changing the displayed year keeps the queue anchored to the original first date. Dates and times before that first start have no assigned coverage. Equal turns do not establish equal workload, pay or availability: the rota does not include leave, holidays, absence or swaps.

Times use your local clock. Calendar exports use floating local timestamps without a fixed time zone, so check your calendar app after import, especially around daylight-saving changes. Weekly and custom blocks are continuous events rather than separate daily shifts.

Your settings stay in this browser unless you choose to share or export them. Anyone with a share link can read the names and settings it contains. Deleting the saved rota does not delete downloaded files, printed copies or imported calendar events.

Worked example

Six people take weekly turns from Monday, 4 January 2027 at 09:00. Person 1 returns on Monday, 15 February. There are 52 starts in 2027: persons 1 to 4 have nine each, and persons 5 and 6 have eight each. The final block starts on 27 December 2027 and ends on 3 January 2028 at 09:00.

Common questions

Can I choose my own block length?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter 1 to 366 whole calendar days per person, such as 3 or 14 days. The same local handover time applies at each end. Handovers can move between weekdays when the length is not a multiple of seven. Daily and weekly presets remain available.

How do the start date and weekly handover day work together?

The first start anchors every weekly block. Changing the date automatically selects its weekday. Changing the weekday moves the first date within the same Monday-to-Sunday week. At the supported date limits, it uses the closest matching date within the range.

Why does a previous-year block appear?

A block that still covers part of the selected year is shown in full. It is marked as carry-in and excluded from the number of blocks starting in that year.

Does the rota restart in January?

No. Turns continue from the original first start. Changing only the displayed year preserves everyone's position in the queue.

Can I account for leave, swaps or pay?

No. This is a fixed repeating rota. Confirm availability, workplace rules, actual workload and pay with your employer or HR team.

What is included when I print or download?

The complete list of blocks overlapping the year is included, even when a phone shows one week. Calendar files keep each block continuous; the CSV includes explicit start and end dates and times.
